15 May What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 5
This week, Year 6 have been enjoying their exciting STEAM project based around designing and making Summer Savoury Scones.
As part of their science and food research, the children explored different food groups and discussed where ingredients belong within a balanced diet. They investigated the nutritional benefits of savoury scones and considered how to create the healthiest and most balanced recipe possible. The children also tasted a range of seasonal fruits and vegetables and sorted them into categories as part of their research. During taste-testing sessions, the children evaluated foods based on their texture, smell, taste and appearance to help inform their final designs.
In design and maths, the children created their own scone designs using a clear design criteria. They then applied their knowledge of ratio to scale recipes accurately so they could make enough savoury scones for the whole class.
The children also developed important cooking and baking skills, including cutting, rubbing, mixing and kneading, as they worked collaboratively to prepare and bake their savoury scones. Finally, they enjoyed tasting their delicious creations as a well-earned snack. It has been wonderful to see the children combining creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills throughout the project!
