This week in Year 5, in RE, we were continuing our learning on the Sikhi. We learnt about Guru Tegh Bahadur and his impact on the Sikh faith. We started the lesson by discussing what we think bravery is and how we can show bravery in our daily lives. We discussed the meaning of persecution and who might have faced persecution throughout history and who might still face persecution today.
In pairs, the children researched parts of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s story, focussing on key information to summarise and what made the Guru brave. In groups, we then thought about some character’s in our story, the Guru himself, who was martyred for his religion, The Guru’s wife, The Emperor who killed the Guru and a follower of the Guru who took the Guru’s head to try and respectfully cremate it.
We put ourselves in the shoes of these characters and created freeze frames which depict a summary of the scene. As a class we discussed how the Guru showed bravery, how each character must be feeling and asked ourselves what would we have done if we were Sikh or Hindu at the time, facing persecution from the Emperor.
