15 May What’s happening in Year 4 – Week 5
This week in Year 4, we carried out an exciting science enquiry to investigate the effect of distance on sound. We began by planning our investigation together and discussing how to make it a fair test. We talked about the variables we needed to keep the same, such as using the same voice and speaking at the same volume each time. We also made predictions and many of us thought that the further away we moved, the quieter the sound of our voice would become. It was wonderful to hear the children using their scientific thinking and explaining their ideas confidently.
We then took our investigation outside and used measuring tapes to stand at a range of distances from each other. At each distance, we tested how clearly we could hear a voice and recorded our observations carefully. The children worked brilliantly as teams, showing excellent communication and cooperation throughout the enquiry. We discovered that sound becomes quieter as the distance increases, helping us to understand how sound travels. The children thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on investigation and showed fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity during their learning.
