23 Feb What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 1
This week in science, we have been exploring the ways different solutions and mixtures can be separated. We have focused on four methods: evaporation, filtration, sieving and magnetic attraction.
We have drawn scientific diagrams of each method, predicted which would be most suitable for separating different mixtures and then we used the apparatus to test our hypothesis.
We discovered that salt dissolved in water does not separate using filtration and so we had to use evaporation. We also observed that there could be multiple ways to separate the same mixture, such as flour and pasta, which can be separated using sieving, passing the mixture through an appropriately sized funnel, or using our fingers to pick out the large pieces of pasta.
